How We Research and Check Our Content
Every number on this site has a source and a date. Here is how we find them, check them and correct them.
Owners make real decisions with the numbers they read. This page explains how we research, write and check the guides, benchmarks and calculators on this site, so you can judge how much to rely on them.
Primary sources first
When a fact can be traced to its origin, we go to the origin: the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the IRS, the Social Security Administration, published research and the organizations that ran a survey. We link to the page we used and note its date.
When only a secondary source is available, such as a news report on a study, we say so. When a figure is widely repeated but we cannot find its original source, we do not present it as fact. Where it matters, we say that we could not verify it.
Market prices
Price ranges for services, such as consulting or fractional executives, usually come from firms that sell those services. We cite them as published asking prices, name the publisher and the date, and say that they are not independent benchmarks. We do not publish our own prices in guides.
Our own data
Our benchmarks are calculated directly from official public files. For example, our revenue per employee and labor cost benchmarks use the Census Bureau's Statistics of U.S. Businesses tables, with the file names, the year, the release date and the formula listed on each page. Anyone can download the same files and check the math.
Examples and calculators
Illustrative examples are labeled as made-up numbers. Calculators show their formulas and work only with the numbers you enter. They are estimates for planning, not predictions or promises of results, and not tax or legal advice.
Independent review
Before a page is published, it is checked by a reviewer who did not write it. The review covers every number against its source, any claim stated as fact without support, arithmetic in examples and calculators, and our editorial rules: no promised results, no implied clients or case results we do not have, and clear disclosure when we are one of the options being compared.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we fix it and update the page. If you spot an error, write to [email protected] with the page and what you found. We reply within one business day.

The guides are written and edited by the Rulehedge Growth team, which builds operations and marketing systems for growing companies. We use AI tools in research and drafting, and every page is reviewed and checked against its sources before it goes live.
